the oh so glamorous tv life

I thought I knew a thing or two about makeup and makeup application. That is until I had to do my makeup for TV. It is a totally different, new and sometimes ugly animal. Below are some of the surprising things I’ve discovered in the last 3 months having to do lots of TV makeup for both myself and others.

  1. Think about the amount of makeup you would normally wear for a night out. Now triple it. That’s how much you have to wear on camera just to look somewhat human. We’re talking layers here ladies…foundation, powder, concealer, finishing powder, 3-4 different eye shadows, lip liner, lipstick AND gloss. I’m tired just thinking about it.
  2. Never…and I mean NEVER wax your brows or your upper lip right before you have to go on camera (I would know because I made this mistake). Of course redness is a factor, but that can be taken care of with the above mentioned quantity of makeup. Where the real issue lies is that when you wax your brows, the wax actually removes the fine layer of fuzz that we all have on our skin. You don’t see it in your daily life but the minute you try to apply makeup to the area that was just freshly waxed, your skin is so smooth that the product literally won’t stick to your face.  You end up with a stripe above your brow that’s makeup free and looks totally weird and gross. Couple that with those wonderful/hateful hi-def cameras and you’ve got a real winner on your hands. So wax at least 4-5 days prior to your shoot.
  3. Always have powder on hand because those lights are HOT HOT HOT. You can powder your face until you feel like the Sahara but on camera, you’ll most likely still look shiny. That’s because the lights they use are about as bright and as hot as the surface of the sun. You’ll just have to live with the fact that to the naked eye, your face might look like a hot powdered mess, but to the eye of the camera, you look gorg.

So to sum it all up: more is more, layer on your layers, powder until you can’t powder no more and smile until your lips quiver and you feel like punching someone in the face :)  Oh so glam.
