how I became “that gal” at the front desk

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post courtesy of Leslie, our fabulous Director of First Impressions who began as our PR/Marketing intern prior to graduation…enjoy!

It is often said that people will do anything for love, and I now believe it. My love convinced me to give up my apartment, say goodbye to my paying job, and move two hours from my family and the town that I grew up in to live in a bedroom at my boyfriend’s parents’ house. (Okay…some might call it love; some would also probably call it insanity.) Despite my sacrifices, however, I know in the end it was all worth it. I know this because, from the first moment we met, I knew it was meant to be. BTW…I should probably mention that the love I’m referring to isn’t for my boyfriend (sorry, sweetie!)… it’s my love for Benefit.

If any of you have had the opportunity to visit our office, then you know exactly what I mean when I say there is an overwhelming feeling of amazement when you enter our pretty pink lobby for the first time. For me, it was love at first sight, and I instantly knew I belonged here.

I had the opportunity to first come to Benefit as an intern. I worked with the PR and Marketing departments and I absolutely loved it. Not only did I get to see how much work actually goes on behind the cute packaging and clever names, but I also had the chance to learn a lot about our products and (probably the coolest part), get to see what products would be coming out later on, like my new favorite box o’ powder bella bamba and our very chic b. right! skin care line. Needless to say, it was an awesome experience.

go from intern to employee...just like Leslie!

As my internship came to an end last December, I was also finishing up my last semester of college. For the first time in my life, I had no idea what was in store for me. I suppose many college graduates end up feeling the way I do…after all, graduating college is bittersweet. We may all feel ready to be done with school, but also confused about what lies ahead. Although I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do with my career, I already knew where I wanted to work: at Benefit. I mean, where else would I have the opportunity to work in a pink office?!

So, when I saw the opening for a new Receptionist at Benefit Headquarters, I knew this job would be perfect for me. With a little bit of luck, love, and also some help from the PR and Marketing team (thanks gals!), I am now the new Receptionist here at Beauty Central, aka The Director of First Impressions. It is my voice you hear if you call Benefit Headquarters’ main phone line and I also make the coffee in the morning. My most important role though, is to welcome all of our visitors into the office. I also happen to have the best seat in the house. I sit at a pretty pink desk (incidentally my favorite color), right across from our Deer Cherie, my new bff. I absolutely love coming to work every day, and I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

With summer fast approaching, and another semester of graduates who will soon be entering the work force, I wanted to end my story by offering some advice. Whether you’re a recent graduate, future graduate, or just someone still searching for your dream job, don’t ever give up on something you love. The “perfect” job may not come along right away, but it’s definitely out there. I have been lucky enough to be reunited with my love, and I only hope that all of you are able to find a career you love as well. Good luck out there!

I am extremely interested in attaining a PR or HR internship with Benefit in NY,NY in the fall. Is there anyway you direct me to a site where I can do this? I have been looking for quite some time and have had no luck :(. I have a experience with Shiseido as an intern, but Benefit is a little higher on my list to work for. Please e-mail me if you are able to help! Also, this site is great, thanks!

Thank you so much for posting this article! It has been my goal for the past two years to finish my HR education so I can apply to Benefit. I am so happy to hear that dreams really do come true.

    P.S. Love your pink blazer!
