office space a la benefit

Telling someone I work at Benefit goes one of two ways:

1) Typical guy’s response: “Ahhh, okay. That’s makeup, right? Yeah. I think my sister/mom/girlfriend/co-worker/cousin uses that. Um, do you like sports?”

2) Typical girl’s response: “Ahhh, oh my gosh! I love Benefit! That must be so cool to work there! I love the [insert favorite product here.]”

It’s not too hard to believe that this job definitely has some fun perks. The decor of the San Francisco office alone makes you smile! In lieu of a drab n’ dreary office space, Benefit headquarters looks just like our boutiques and counters (but with desks)! Take a peek inside where I call work…

So, not your typical office space! But it makes Benefit, Benefit!

flirting 101

Spring = new beginnings. And for some of us, these new beginnings signify the end of previous romantic relationships and the start of the exciting world of being single. And being single means, well, needing the necessary flirting skills to navigate the often-tricky dating scene. I decided to ask the most flirtatious BeneBabes for a little refresher course in Flirting 101…

this move should probably be your last resort

Benefit co-founders Jean & Jane Ford are experts in the fine art of flirting…they even named our saucy red lipstick flirt alert! Their mantra has always been, “laughter is the best cosmetic…so grin and wear it!” This definitely proves true on the dating scene. A gal who is having fun and laughing is irresistible, and a smile goes a long way when dealing with the opposite sex. Beyond a sweet smile, here are some other top tips from the gals here at the office:

  • It’s all about the eyes. Ashlye in Marketing swears by a killer combo of smoky eyes and strong eye contact. But not too smoky, or you’ll scare off the boys. For a dramatic eye that’s subtly flirty but not too overpowering, Danielle in Art pairs creaseless cream shadow/liner in a busy signal, a deep shimmery brown, with velvet eyeshadow in leggy, a pale nude topped with tons of mascara.
  • Ask questions! Copywriter Sarah tells it like it is: “guys love to talk about themselves.” So, find out what he does for fun. Safe topics involve weekend activities, movies & TV shows, career/college background, and of course, sports. But, cautions Alyssa, “only go the sports route if you know what you’re talking about!”
  • Be bold. Not for the faint of heart, Alyssa’s favorite flirty move is to “buy him a drink!” And Juliette met her now-fiancé Max at a bar when she approached him and – wait for it – pretended she recognized him and called him by the wrong name. Oldest trick in the book!
  • BUZZarella bonus tip: I’ve been told by multiple people that I involuntarily “pout” my lips more than normal when deep in conversation with a cute boy. Silly as it may sound, it hasn’t steered me wrong yet. Hey, anything that places more attention on your pout can’t be a bad thing!

look the part: job interview

Congratulations, they loved your resume and you landed an interview! So how do you turn that into an offer? Being qualified for a job is half the battle. Being able to show that you are qualified is a different story. Presenting yourself is a skill that requires practice and precision…literally from head to toe. The key? Look and communicate as polished and perfect in person, as you appear on paper.

With many people looking for jobs these days, I consulted my trusty Benefit colleagues on what beauty tips got them through the door…

You're hired!

EYES…this is a huge focus since you will be making consistent eye contact for a long period of time. In addition to a good night’s sleep, remember to do these three things: conceal, brighten and emphasize.

Use concealer over dark circles and brighten with an eye brightener like eye bright on the dark eye areas–don’t forget the inner corner of the eye next to the nose bridge.

For eyeshadow, stay away from very dark all-over eyelids and brightly colored shadows. Keep it simple. Use one or two nude shades on the eyelid and a bit of deep brown or taupe shadow in the outer corner of the eye for definition. For emphasis, use the deep shadow to line the lash line. Benefit big beautiful eyes is an all-in-one kit with the perfect neutral shadows and contains concealer for touch-ups.

Finally, top it all off with brown or black mascara.

LIPS…have you ever been in a situation when someone is talking to you but you can’t hear her because her lip color is too loud? Bold lipsticks, bubble gum pink and super shiny gloss can be distracting, which is why for an interview, you go nude. Plus, nude lipstick = less of a chance it’s showing up on your teeth.

FACE…moisturize, conceal imperfections and use an allover cover-up. A light pink blush adds the perfect amount of tint. A little matte bronzer can look good when used in moderation, but hold off on the 80s blush trend until your new-job celebration.

TOP TIPS

…from My Boss (the person who interviewed & hired me): “Think about where you’re interviewing and what would look most appropriate.”

…from a PR Pro: “As much as you love fragrance, SKIP PERFUME!”

…from a Digital Marketing Maven: “Regardless if you are interviewing at a hedge fund, ad agency, or babysitters club, employers want to hire alert, focused, and awake employees who are ready for anything!”

TGIF baby!

At around 2pm on Friday, a restless excitement begins to take over…that buzz of anticipation building up to what we’ve been waiting for since…well, Sunday.

Here at Benefit HQ, you can frequently catch gals touching up makeup at their desks (yes, we have mirrors on our desks!) before heading out to our adventures for the evening. As a self-described master of desktop primping, I’ve become an expert at makeup that goes from daytime to party time.

My favorite trick of the trade? One hot minute, a loose rose-gold powder that makes you look instantly fresh-faced and glowy. It’s also goof-proof…after a light dusting all over your face, you’ll look like a healthier version of yourself. Definitely a must-have after a long workday…or any day, for that matter.

benefit after dark

When it’s REALLY party time, Benefit gals reach for hoola. If the lights are low, you can never be too bronze. At a recent party themed around a certain tan-tastic reality show, Resident BADgal, Geekalicious and I intentionally overdosed on the hoola. Good times!

Last but not least, no nighttime look is complete without BADgal lash. The last thing you want to do after a long day is pile on more makeup, but this mascara somehow magically avoids looking gunky even when applied in multiple layers. Add a little glow and a little lash, and you’re good to go for after-work festivities!

What’s your favorite shortcut for making your makeup go from AM to PM? Have a fab weekend gals!

NYC has a cavity!

To help celebrate Valentine’s Day last week, media darling and I were in New York. We partnered with the CupCake Stop who created a special sugarbomb cupcake just for that day! For $3, you got a delicious sugarbomb cupcake and a free, full-size sugarbomb face powder!

sugar, sugar!

sugar, sugar!

To fight the frigid weather we tried to go into the main cabin of the truck (they had heaters), but the DOH said legally we weren’t allowed by the food. Understandable.

Soooo….to stay warm, we donned sugarbomb aprons over our winter coats and starting dancing! Needless to say, we drew a lot of attention, but within 3 hours we were sold out of 300 cupcakes!

If you were in NY, did you stop by the SugarStop Truck for a delicious sweet treat?!

a beautiful day in SF

As the days get longer and the sun comes out, I’m always amazed at how much San Francisco wakes up. Just by people watching this past weekend, I could feel the spring energy. I like to pack my weekends full of activities and I’m always looking for new things to do and see in the City when the weather gets gorgeous.

I left my heart...

SF locals enjoying the sun

Geekalicious’ Vancouver recommendations from “going for the gold“ inspired me to ask, “How do you spend a beautiful day in your town or city?” I’m opening up the forum with a short-list of my 5 favorite things to do on a beautiful San Francisco day…

1. Eat brunch. There are many worthy eateries in “local flavor: the best SF grub“–especially at the brunch spots that have outdoor seating like Zazie. SF is a big brunch town and locals will be quick introduce you to their latest and greatest finds.

2. Shop in the local neighborhoods. Fillmore and Chestnut Street in Pacific Heights and the Marina are charming with shops full of pretty things to buy. I also love the Mission District for more funky, vintage and one-of-a-kind finds, plus, because of the location, it always feels a few degrees warmer than the rest of the city.

3. Explore SF’s parks. A hike through Land’s End always reinforces my allegiance to this city. Bluffs, cypress trees, beach, ocean views…all the while still being in the City. This pic says it all…

4. People watch at the Revolution Cafe in the Mission District and observe the congregation of bohemian artist-types that frequent this place…go on a Sunday and you get live jazz music as your soundtrack.

5. Enjoy the view at the Cliff House. The view of the Pacific Ocean is spectacular and only gets better when you’re sipping one of their delish bloody marys.

going for the gold

The guts, the glory, the monumental Opening Ceremony! The XXI Olympic games are starting today in Vancouver and for the next two weeks, we’ll all be cheering on athletes from across the globe (my DVR will be set to unabashedly follow Shaun White and his awesome red hair — aka The Flying Tomato).

A few weeks ago, the Olympic rings were lit for the first time floating in the harbor creating a beautiful view! They are almost 46- feet (or 14-meters) tall and sitting on a barge in the Burrard Inlet.

Olympic Rings 2010: Nancy Dolan, Seaside Designs

If you’re lucky enough to go to the Olympics this year, our Benefit gals in Vancouver have a few hot (err, cold) spots for you while you’re not watching bobsledding, figure skating, cross-country skiing, hockey, or my personal favorite, curling.

Best places to eat: Cactus Club, Earl’s, and Hapa Japanese Restaurant

Best dessert place: Scoop Frozen Yogurt on 4th Avenue

Best place to hang out: Vancouver Art Gallery, Scotiabank Theatre, and Robson Ice Skating Rink

Best place to meet athletes: Cruising Robson Street, Jogging in Stanley Park, and Shopping at the Olympic Store in The Bay downtown (gotta look the part, you know!)

Best place to celeb-spot: Lobby at the Opus Hotel

Best place to get pretty: Benefit Cosmetics counter & Brow Bar at Holt Renfrew!

Which sporting events are you excited for? Any of you going? If so, tell Shaun I say hi!  ;)
